The Bookstore Tote
Share
There are two kinds of bookstore trips.
The ones where you know exactly what you're looking for.
And the ones where you walk through the doors saying, I'm just going to browse.
Today's Style Edit is dedicated to the second kind.
The afternoon with nowhere else to be. The slow wander through shelves you weren't planning to visit. The book you pick up because the cover caught your attention. The second book because you've heard good things. The third because, well, you're already here.
And naturally, the tote you were clever enough to bring along.
For today's Edit, we're taking our Celestial Geometric Tote Bag out for an afternoon of book hunting, coffee drinking, and leaving just enough room for one more.
Featured Piece: The Bookstore Tote
Burgundy, blue, and cream geometric shapes give today's featured tote its rich, slightly academic palette, while scattered crescent moons and tiny celestial details add a little Johanna V. Creative whimsy.
It's bold without being overly bright and patterned without being difficult to style—which makes it especially lovely alongside the pieces that tend to come out when bookstore weather arrives.
Denim.
Cardigans.
A favorite coat.
Loafers or worn-in sneakers.
Maybe a scarf when the weather finally cooperates.
But most importantly?
There's room for books.
Priorities.
Dress for a Few Hours Among the Shelves
A bookstore outfit should satisfy one very important requirement:
You should be comfortable enough to lose track of time.
Start with your favorite straight-leg jeans or relaxed trousers and add a cream tee, button-down, or lightweight sweater.
Layer on a burgundy, navy, camel, or cream cardigan when it's cooler.
Finish with loafers, sneakers, or ankle boots—something you're perfectly happy standing around in while reading the first three pages of six different books.
Then add the tote.
Because the pattern already combines burgundy, blue, cream, and gold-toned celestial details, you don't need to build an elaborate outfit around it.
Let the bag be the interesting part.
What's in the Bookstore Tote?
Before we start adding books, we need the essentials.
A good bookstore tote might begin with:
- Wallet
- Keys
- Phone
- Lip balm
- Headphones
- Journal or small notebook
- Favorite pen
- Your current read
- Sunglasses
- A reusable water bottle, if it fits comfortably
And then—
leave room.
This is crucial.
Do not fill the bookstore tote before entering the bookstore.
We know what you're here to do.
Browse Somewhere You Normally Skip
You probably already know which section you'll walk toward first.
Fantasy.
Romance.
History.
Mystery.
Art.
Whatever aisle has learned to expect you.
Today, visit that one.
But then wander somewhere else.
Pick up a cookbook even if you're not much of a cook.
Look through the oversized art books.
Read the back of a biography about someone you barely know.
Visit poetry.
Find the weird little local-history shelf.
Look at the beautiful editions of books you already own and remind yourself that owning Pride and Prejudice three times is probably enough.
Probably.
Part of the fun of a bookstore is finding something you weren't looking for.
Give yourself time to do exactly that.
Judge a Book by Its Cover
We officially grant permission.
Pick up the beautiful one.
The strange one.
The one with gilded edges.
The one whose cover illustration made you walk backward three steps because you caught it out of the corner of your eye.
You don't necessarily have to buy it.
Read the synopsis. Flip through a few pages. Look it up. Add it to your reading list.
Sometimes a cover is simply the introduction.
And sometimes you're carrying it to the register ten minutes later.
Both outcomes are acceptable.
Take Your New Book Somewhere
This might be the most important part of the ritual.
Once you've chosen your book—or books—don't necessarily go straight home.
Find a café.
Order something good.
Choose a table by the window if one is available.
Pull the newest addition from your tote and read the first chapter.
There's something particularly satisfying about beginning a book while you're still out in the world.
The book isn't part of the shelf yet.
It hasn't joined the TBR pile.
For the next hour, it's simply the thing you came here to read.
Make the Tote Part of the Outfit
One of the easiest ways to wear a heavily patterned accessory is to give it a relatively simple backdrop.
For this tote, try:
Cream + Denim
A cream sweater, jeans, sneakers, and the tote for an easy everyday combination.
Burgundy + Camel
Pull out the warmer tones with a burgundy cardigan and camel coat or trousers.
Navy + Cream
Let the blue geometric details come forward with navy trousers or denim and a cream top.
Black + Gold
Keep everything else simple and add small gold jewelry to echo the celestial details.
You don't need to match the pattern exactly.
Just choose one part of it and let the rest do its thing.
For Library Sales, Used Bookstores & the Dangerous $1 Table
A bookstore tote isn't limited to beautiful independent bookstores with coffee shops attached.
Sometimes book hunting gets considerably less polished.
Library sales.
Thrift stores.
Used bookstores.
Little Free Libraries.
Community sales.
The mysterious box marked BOOKS $1 that you absolutely have to investigate.
Bring the tote.
Especially when you know there's a chance you'll be leaving with more than you planned.
These are often the books that become the most fun additions to a collection—the old edition, the unexpected title, the author you've never heard of, or the hardcover that cost less than your coffee.
Let It Become Your Bookstore Tote
There's something charming about assigning ordinary objects little jobs.
The market basket.
The travel journal.
The coffee mug you always use while reading.
The blanket that lives on your favorite chair.
And maybe this becomes the tote you grab when books are involved.
It carries your current read to the café.
Comes along to the library sale.
Gets filled at the used bookstore.
Holds the journal where you keep your never-ending reading list.
Eventually, it becomes part of the ritual.
Because sometimes the things we use again and again become special precisely because of all the ordinary places they've been.
