Take the Scenic Route

Take the Scenic Route

There are errands.

And then there are the days when a twenty-minute drive somehow becomes an afternoon.

You stop for coffee before you've even left town. Take the road you've never driven because the view looks better. Pull over for the little antique shop you've passed six times. Find somewhere for lunch because you're already out. And somehow arrive home hours later with a few things you definitely weren't planning to buy.

Those are the days today's Style Edit was made for.

We're styling our Desert Floral Cactus Crossbody Bag for an afternoon with a loose destination, a few essentials, and plenty of room for detours.

Featured Piece

Deep burgundy meets desert green, scattered cream florals, tiny blue details, and illustrated cacti in today's featured crossbody.

The darker palette gives the Desert Floral Cactus Crossbody Bag an earthy, slightly Western feel, while the florals soften the design and keep it playful.

It's compact enough to carry the things you actually need without bringing half the house along, and the adjustable black strap makes it easy to wear across the body while you're walking, browsing, photographing, or carrying whatever you inevitably pick up along the way.

And because the print already brings plenty of personality, styling it doesn't need to be complicated.

Look One: Coffee, Denim & an Early Start

Some day trips deserve an unnecessarily early start.

Not because you have to leave at 8 a.m.

Because stopping for coffee on the way is part of the plan.

Pair the crossbody with straight-leg denim, a simple cream tee, comfortable sneakers or ankle boots, and a lightweight jacket.

The cream pulls from the florals while denim lets the burgundy and cactus green remain the interesting part of the outfit.

Add sunglasses, grab your coffee, throw the essentials in your bag, and go.

The formula: denim + cream + comfortable shoes + one really good print.

Look Two: Wander the Little Shops

Small-town shopping has its own particular danger.

You go into a bookstore to look.

Then there's an antique shop.

Then a tiny art gallery.

Then someone has handmade ceramics in a window.

Suddenly you're carrying three bags and wondering how this happened.

For a day of wandering, try relaxed trousers or jeans with a fitted neutral top, boots or sneakers, and the crossbody worn toward the front of your body.

Keep the outfit simple and let the illustrated cactus-and-floral print add the personality.

And most importantly: wear shoes you can actually walk in.

There is always one more shop.

Look Three: Follow the Road a Little Farther

Not every stop needs to involve shopping.

Find the scenic overlook.

Walk the easy trail.

Visit the botanical garden.

Pull over somewhere beautiful because the light is particularly good.

Bring a camera if that's your thing. Pack a book if you know you'll find somewhere to sit. Keep your phone, wallet, keys, and other little essentials close without carrying a large bag around all afternoon.

Sometimes the best part of going somewhere is everything you find before you get there.

Build an Outfit Around the Mood, Not the Print

A patterned accessory doesn't mean every other part of your outfit needs to coordinate with it.

Instead, look at the overall feeling.

This crossbody has an earthy palette, so it naturally works alongside pieces like:

  • Cream or ivory
  • Medium and dark denim
  • Olive or sage green
  • Chocolate brown
  • Camel
  • Black
  • Burgundy
  • Warm rust

You could pull one color directly from the print, but you don't have to.

A cream sweater, jeans, brown boots, and this bag?

Done.

A black dress, denim jacket, and this bag?

Also done.

Sometimes the easiest way to wear a print is to stop trying so hard to match it.

Pack for the Detours

A small crossbody requires a little editing.

That's not necessarily a bad thing.

Bring your phone.

Wallet.

Keys.

Lip balm.

Sunglasses.

Earbuds.

Maybe a tiny hand cream or whatever small item you genuinely reach for during the day.

Leave behind the collection of things you've been carrying for six months "just in case."

The goal is enough for the day without feeling like you're hauling supplies for an expedition.

Because if you do stumble across something worth bringing home, you'll want your hands free.

Romanticize the Random Stop

The scenic route isn't always actually scenic.

Sometimes it's a gas station with surprisingly good snacks.

A fruit stand on the side of the road.

A weird little roadside attraction.

A thrift shop in a town you've never heard of.

A diner with a sign that makes you think, We have to stop there.

Stop anyway.

Part of the fun of a day without a strict itinerary is allowing the random things to become part of it.

Take the picture.

Buy the postcard.

Order the pie.

Go into the shop.

You can get back on the road afterward.

Let Your Everyday Pieces Collect Stories

There's something lovely about the things you use enough that they start becoming attached to memories.

The bag you took on that weekend trip.

The jacket you wore every autumn.

The notebook you carried everywhere.

The crossbody that's somehow in photographs from five completely different places.

Everyday pieces don't have to stay pristine on a shelf to be special.

Sometimes their charm comes from how often they get to come along.
