The Journal Entry No. 06

Make a List of the Little Things You Love

Not everything that makes life good has to be important.

Before You Write

Sometimes gratitude feels like it has to be profound.

We think about the people we love, the home we have, the opportunities we've been given, the big moments we know we're supposed to appreciate.

And of course, those things matter.

But there are also the completely unnecessary little things that make being a person surprisingly delightful.

Finding money in a coat pocket.

Fresh sheets.

The first sip of something you've been looking forward to all morning.

A song coming on at exactly the right time.

Walking into a bookstore with nowhere else you need to be.

Seeing a dog hanging its head out of a car window.

A really good pen.

The smell of rain.

Getting into bed when you're really tired.

None of these things are going to change your life.

But maybe that's exactly why they're worth noticing.

Not every good thing has to be transformative.

Some things are allowed to make you happy for thirty seconds.

So today, we're making a list of them.

This Week’s Prompt

What are the little things that make you ridiculously happy?

Not the things you think you're supposed to write in a gratitude journal.

The oddly specific things.

The things that might sound completely insignificant to someone else.

Think about the tiny moments throughout your day that make you smile, relax your shoulders, linger for another second, or think, Oh, I love this.

Maybe it's the corner piece of a brownie.

Maybe it's watching cream swirl into coffee.

Maybe it's when the book you're reading gets so good that you suddenly realize you've been sitting in the same position for two hours.

Maybe it's spotting a ladybug.

Maybe it's putting on clothes straight from the dryer.

Your list doesn't need to impress anyone.

It just needs to be yours.

If You Need Somewhere to Start...

Think small and get specific.

  • What smell instantly makes you happy?
  • What's your favorite little treat?
  • What sound do you love?
  • What's something about your morning routine you genuinely enjoy?
  • What kind of weather makes you want to go outside?
  • What's a tiny luxury you appreciate every single time?
  • What always makes you laugh?
  • What's your favorite thing to find unexpectedly?
  • What do you love seeing outside?
  • What's something you enjoy that you've never really thought about before?
  • What ordinary object makes your day a little better?
  • What's something you loved as a child that you still love now?
  • What's one tiny thing you're looking forward to this week?

And don't dismiss an answer because it seems too silly.

Those might be the best ones.

Put It on Paper

At the top of a fresh page, write:

50 Little Things I Love

Yes.

Fifty.

The first ten will probably be easy.

Your favorite drink. Your favorite food. A person you love. Your favorite book.

Keep going.

Somewhere around twenty, you'll have to start paying closer attention.

That's where this gets interesting.

Think about textures.

Smells.

Sounds.

Foods.

Places.

Weather.

Tiny rituals.

Things you notice while driving.

Things you always stop to look at.

Things that make your home feel cozy.

Things you look forward to buying at the grocery store.

Things that make you feel like a kid again.

Maybe your list eventually includes:

The tiny spoon.

When toast is exactly the right amount of toasted.

Freshly sharpened pencils.

Finding the moon during the daytime.

Flowers growing somewhere they weren't planted.

The sound of turning a page.

Ladybugs.

Keep going until you reach fifty.

And if you think of number fifty-one?

Write that down, too.

One Last Thought

There will always be things we're working toward.

Things we want to improve.

Places we want to go.

Problems we'd like to solve.

That's part of being alive, too.

But it's very easy to become so focused on creating a better life that we stop noticing the tiny things making the current one good.

Your list probably isn't made up of extraordinary experiences.

That's the point.

Most of the things that make a day enjoyable aren't.

They're scattered throughout it in little pieces.

A good song.

A comfortable chair.

A flower.

A funny text.

A bug crawling across a leaf.

A snack you forgot you bought.

Maybe happiness isn't always something enormous that arrives.

Sometimes it's just something small enough that you have to pay attention to notice it.

This Week’s Featured Journal

Ladybug Garden Journal

This week's journal couldn't take itself too seriously if it tried.

Little ladybugs in cheerful shades of coral, yellow, and orange wander between simple white flowers across a warm brown background. It's playful, a little nostalgic, and full of tiny details—the exact kind of design that makes an ordinary notebook feel a bit more fun.

Which makes the Ladybug Garden Journal a perfect home for a list celebrating life's little things.

Ladybugs themselves feel like one of those things.

They're tiny. You could easily walk right past one.

But somehow, spotting one on a leaf still feels like discovering something.

Use these pages for the little things you love, the funny things you want to remember, favorite quotes, tiny observations, lists that don't need a purpose, and moments that aren't important enough for a milestone but are absolutely worth keeping anyway.

Until Next Time

Keep your list somewhere you can find it again.

Better yet, don't consider it finished.

Add number fifty-one next week.

Number sixty-three next month.

Number one hundred and twelve when you suddenly discover something wonderfully specific that you never realized you loved.

There are worse things to collect than little reasons to be happy.

The Journal Entry is a weekly invitation to put something on paper—thoughts to explore, questions worth sitting with, and little reasons to keep filling the pages.
