They Will Only Hear What They Are Ready to Hear

John 8:43 (ESV)

"Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you cannot bear to hear my word."

As I read this verse, I see a lesson that extends beyond this specific conversation between Jesus and those questioning Him. It is a reminder about the condition of the heart when receiving truth.

Jesus did not need to prove Himself. He taught openly, performed miracles, and spoke with authority. Those who were willing to listen heard His words and followed Him. Yet there were others who continually challenged Him. No matter what He said, they were unwilling to accept it because they had already decided what they wanted to believe.

This is something we often encounter in everyday life. Sometimes we find ourselves trying to explain our perspective, defend our character, or convince someone of a truth we know. Yet if a person has already made up their mind, no amount of explanation may change it.

That does not mean we should stop speaking truth. It simply means we do not need to exhaust ourselves trying to force understanding where there is no willingness to receive it.

Jesus remained faithful to the truth. He did not change His message to gain approval, nor did He spend His time desperately trying to convince those determined to reject Him.

There is wisdom in recognizing that people often hear only what they are ready to hear. When a heart is closed, even clear words can be misunderstood, dismissed, or twisted. Understanding cannot be forced.

Our responsibility is not to make everyone agree with us. Our responsibility is to remain faithful, speak truth with love, and trust God with the outcome.

Not everyone will understand, and not everyone will listen. Sometimes the most peaceful thing we can do is say what is true and leave the rest in God's hands.
